Fergus is a keen sportsman and played rugby to a very high level. He played for GHK, Glasgow Hawks and Boroughmuir, and Captained Glasgow for 6 years including the last time they won the district championship in 1989. He scored a famous try against South Africa on their tour of Scotland and England in 1994. He toured Argentina with Scotland and captained a Scotland XV to Zimbabwe in 1995. He played for Scotland in the Hong Kong Sevens and got 10 ‘A’ caps in his rugby career.
On retirement from Semi pro rugby he played for a number of select sides in the Dubai sevens and went 7 times to Bermuda to play for the Classic Lions in the equivalent of the ‘old boys’ world cup.
Since retiring from Classics rugby he is now a very keen golfer and skier.
